Spela Skola Spela Kenya is a unique project that provides traditional music workshops and a concert experience for students aged 6-18. Participants have the opportunity to take at least two lessons to learn how to play bunde drums and sing traditional songs from Kenya. The workshops go beyond just learning, as students actively play various African drums and immerse themselves in Kenya's vibrant culture. The project culminates with an exhilarating concert, where students join talented musicians on stage, becoming integral parts of the performance. This transformative experience allows students to appreciate the beauty and richness of Kenyan music, culture and heritage. The teacher, Reagan Oduor Nyachieng'a, plays an Afro-percussion music. He brings the lively spirit of Kenya to life through music. His passion and commitment to his craft highlight his ability to engage students through the Spela Skola Spela Kenya project, fostering a strong sense of importance for collaboration among students. In addition, the students get knowledge about the instrument they are playing which is the bunde drums, made of cowhide skin and metal containers, are a fascinating musical instrument. They are traditionally played by people with Luo ancestry or who speak a Luo language and reside in the Nyanza region of western Kenya. The unique organic groove sound produced by a set of 4-7 drums is well understood by those who speak the Luo language, known as Dholuo. This project offers a wonderful opportunity for curious and eager learners to explore traditional music and may as well book private lessons to learn how to make their drums.
